Deepfreeze I – 1956. USS Edisto. Rare

Operation Deepfreeze I 1955-56, New Zealand Advance Party, 1956 (Jan. 16) envelope to the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office in Washington, cancelled by U.S.S. ”Edisto” datestamp, with endorsement ”Carried up the Ferrar Glacier,/McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, by/the New Zealand Advance Party.” and signed by Lt. Cdr. William Smith of the H.M.N.Z.S. ”Endeavour”, Bernard Gunn (after whom Mount Gunn was named) and Dr. Trevor Hatherton (commemorated by the Hatherton Glacier), very scarce, only around 10 such covers exist (acc. to Grosvenor Philatelic Auctions).
